Pompano Beach

Jeffrey M. Hurt

November 21, 1955, Jeffrey Michael Hurt was the third of five children born to Paul and Rita Hurt, pioneers of Pompano Beach. Jeff spent his younger years working alongside his father guarding the beaches of Pompano, and playing football for Pompano Beach High School, graduating Class of 1974. Jeff received his Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, and was hired by Deerfield Beach Police Department in 1978. Jeff spent his entire thirty-five year career in Law Enforcement protecting and serving the citizens of Deerfield Beach, retiring from the Broward Sheriff’s Office in 2013.

Jeff married the love of his life, Janine Costa Hurt in 1983, and their forty-two years together brought three children, Matthew (Nicole); Andrea (Robert); and Paul; and five grandchildren, Madison and Easton; Makenna; Kristin and River.

Jeff loved the life he built with Janine, but it is no secret that Jeff’s pride and joy were his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Bop Bop”, and he devoted an irreplaceable amount of time with them. Whether it was grilling their favorite meals, gardening, mudding at River Ranch, travelling, taking golf cart rides to local restaurants, or just sitting on the porch talking, Jeff ensured he taught the kids remarkable history, important life-lessons, and wisdom. Jeff always encouraged his kids and grandkids to ask questions, with the most important, of course, being the one he considered able to solve any predicament one found themselves in: “What Would the Indians Do?”

Jeff was often a quiet a man but never missed an opportunity to sneak in a wisecrack or share a story of the good ole days. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching football, his favorite westerns or reruns of the Andy Griffith Show.

Jeff was known for being a loyal, honest, and reliable man, a true friend, the fun Uncle, the tolerable In-Law, and a generous man known for helping anyone in need, a passion he carried on-duty and at home. The front door was always open (not literally though because, mosquitoes), and Jeff & Janine never hesitated to offer a guest room or a couch to those in need of a safe place to stay (people and animals, alike). There were always plenty of seats on the porch for anybody to stop by and enjoy a cold one, as long as they didn’t mind a black lab lying at their feet. Jeff was willing and able to whip up a meal for anybody at any time. Early in his police career, Jeff earned the nickname “Ribs” for the masterpieces he created on his BBQ grill.

Jeff’s passing has left an insurmountable amount of pain and grief felt by all who loved him, however, we take comfort in knowing how many lives he has impacted for the better. As much as he looked out for his family and friends, and devoted his entire career, risking his life to keep complete strangers safe, we cannot think of a better Guardian Angel to have watching over us than Jeff Hurt.
