John J. Heiser

Dr. John J. Heiser D.O., F.A.O.C.A. Lt. Col. USAF ret. He lived by the brotherhood of man. Born September 23, 1931 in Bayonne N.J. The only child of Angelica (Geery) and John J. Heiser of Bayonne N.J. and grandson of Rose (Henry) and John J. Heiser of Guttenberg N.J. He graduated from St. Peters Prep (Jersey City), Villanova University and The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing internship and Residency at PCOM he became attending anesthesiologist at the newly opened Cherry Hill Medical Center in New Jersey. He received his master’s degree in anesthesia and fifteen years later became chairman of the department and residency trainer of the very successful anesthesia program. In 1966 he became Chief of staff as the hospital expanded to the John F. Kennedy Hospital System. In 1978 Dr. Heiser was appointed Clinical Professor of Surgery at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of the New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. He is the author and co-author of numerous published anesthesia articles one of which appeared in “Toward Learning” which is in the Library of Congress. Dr. Heiser served his country in The United States Air Force Reserve with the 514 Medical Elements (MAC) of The McGuire Air force Base being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also served actively on state boards too numerous to count and was with the Board of Governors and The Examining Board of The American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologist. He was given the Life Time achievement award for all his work in 2010 by the A.O.C.A. In 1960 He married the love of his life, Patricia Sayres R.N. (Philadelphia) and they were fortunate to have 5 wonderful children, Patricia, Judith, John, Timothy and Lindsay. They are also blessed with 5 amazing grandchildren, Ryan, Danielle, Jonathan, Kodi, and Austin. A resident of Fort Lauderdale since 1986, he was an avid sportsman enjoying all sports especially fishing and hunting. He was a founding member of the Cape May Marlin Tuna Club. More than anything he was an amazing family man with an infectious smile that he kept until the end. In his life, helping the other guy wasn’t an effort it was the norm. The world is a better place for having him in it. A Mass of the Christian burial will be Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11AM St. Jerome Church 2533 S.W 9 Ave, Fort Lauderdale. Burial with Military Honors at the Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale. A traditional “Irish wake” will follow in the back room of McGuire’s Hill Tavern.
